New Ampera E-Rev

Vauxhall’s electric car arrives at Eden Vauxhall soon.

The first extended-range vehicle in the UK, the Ampera E-REV offers extensive emissions free driving delivered but its range-extender generator enabling the driver to cover an impressive 350 miles.  Ampera drivers in the UK also benefit from:-

  • Zero VED
  • London congestion charge exemption
  • Company car drivers’ Benefit-in-Kind (BIK) tax – five per cent

The five-door, four-seat Ampera achieves:-

  • 0-60mph in nine seconds
  • Top speed of 100mph
  • 150PS and 370Nm of torque

Drivers can expect between 25-50 miles of zero-tailpipe emissions motoring (often enough for a typical daily commute), yet thanks to the Ampera’s innovative range-extender generator, it can be driven for up to 310 miles without having to re-charge the battery or replenish the fuel tank.

The Vauxhall Ampera is different because it’s powered by a super-efficient, battery-powered electric motor, which uses the support of the on-board engine-generator only when necessary. It overcomes the range limitations of simple battery electric cars while avoiding the compromises evident in a hybrid car.

Based on current fuel prices, Vauxhall predicts that the Ampera will cost roughly one-fifth of the current cost per mile of an equivalent petrol engined car.

To fully charge the Ampera costs on average just £1 providing a range of up to 50 miles. Charging the car overnight also benefits the eco-structure by using energy that would otherwise be wasted as it's not cost effective to switch major generating plants on and off.

So, assuming an average range of 40 miles per charge and 8,000 miles per year purely on electric power, the 216 charges needed by the Ampera would cost approximately £216 per year in electricity – about the same as running your freezer and refrigerator.

How it works

The Ampera is the first electric vehicle that can go anywhere anytime.

A 16 kWh lithium ion battery powers the 111kW/150PS electric motor and the vehicle can be plugged into a standard 240v outlet for charging*. Depending on the style of driving and road conditions, a distance of between 25 and 50 miles can be covered in battery-operated mode, completely free of emissions.

The Ampera is always driven electrically and when the battery has reached its minimum state of charge, the range extender automatically turns on and powers a generator to feed the electric drive unit extending the Ampera’s total driving range to 360 miles.

Ampera’s clever Voltec system helps it achieve an incredible *175mpg and combined emissions of below 40g/km.

Charge and go

Everything you need to charge the Ampera at home or at the office or, in fact, anywhere, comes with the car. The state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery can be recharged from a 240 V / 10A power supply in about six hours**. The portable charge cord pack is equipped with LED indicators that illuminate green or flashing red to identify the charge cord status.

Just plug the standard charging cord and vehicle plug into any standard wall socket and store it in the boot when you’re done.

Features include a ‘Drive Mode’ button on the dashboard, so drivers can choose between Normal (default), Sport, Mountain or Hold modes to optimise the car’s energy management depending on prevailing driving an road conditions.

  • Normal mode - the Ampera is powered by a charge provided from a normal household outlet to travel up to 50 emission-free miles powered by its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery – suitable for a majority of average, 40-mile commutes. When the battery’s energy level drops below its minimum charge point, the engine-generator kicks in to supply electricity to the electric motor, enabling extended range travel. Regenerative braking will sustain the charge still further.
  • Sport mode – offers a performance boost and improves throttle response
  • Mountain mode - enables the range-extender to run before the battery reaches its minimum state of charge. Drivers select this mode after a full charge, or 10 to 15 minutes before entering mountainous terrain, allowing optimum performance up sustained inclines.
  • Hold mode - engages the range-extender immediately, preserving charge stored in the battery for urban areas or restricted emission zones.
