Helping Teenagers Stay Safe Behind the Wheel

Eden Vauxhall at Fareham is backing its local fire station in its initiative to keep teenage drivers safer when behind the wheel.

Teenage Road Accident Prevention Training (TRAPT) was launched last year by Fareham Fire Station and aims to educate young drivers on the consequences of driving too fast and without due care and attention. The programme hopes to reduce both car crime and car accidents in the town.

Eden Vauxhall provides the programme with cars it would otherwise scrap for use in the programme’s car cutting demonstrations and a key ring for all youngsters who take part in the hope that it will serve as a timely reminder each time the key is placed in the ignition.

The hard-hitting programme includes presentations and discussion as well as demonstrations on cutting accident victims out of cars. Youngsters also have the chance to handle the cutting gear themselves.

The course intends to graphically bring home the consequences of immature or even illegal driving in the hope that teenagers who may be tempted to commit car crime or even drive too fast to ‘impress’ their friends will now think twice.

The partnership came about through firefighter David Higgins who is based at the station and is friends with Eden Vauxhall Fareham’s general manager Scott McNicol.
